Richard "Dick" Allen Sr

Richard “Dick” Merle Allen Sr., 87, of Marshalltown, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.  Funeral services for Dick will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 21, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Dick and his family.  Richard Allen was born on October 6, 1930 in Rhodes, Iowa to Fred and Grace Kroener Allen. On September 18, 1948, Dick was united in marriage to Shirley Davis in Eldora. He had worked for Strands as a baker for 30 plus years as well as Fisher Control, retiring in 1992. Dick enjoyed watching golf and the New York Yankees, fishing, hunting and bowling. Dick also enjoyed playing cribbage, and he even was the state cribbage champion in 1964. He also was a little league coach and a strong union man as well as an avid TV watcher with his eyes closed!!  Dick is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Shirley. Children: Richard Allen Jr., Stephen Allen and Dennis Allen all of Marshalltown. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jamie Birkness, Anna Opperman and Richard Allen III as well as great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and his brothers, Lloyd Allen and Roger Allen.  Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Grace; children, Douglas Allen and Brian O’Donnell and brothers, Wallace Allen and William Allen.
