Richard "Rick" Hoagland

Richard “Rick” Hoagland, 74, formerly of Altoona, Iowa, passed away on April 1, 2021 at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, Iowa under the care of Iowa River Hospice.  Services are currently pending and burial will take place at Hilltop Cemetery in Mendham, New Jersey at a later date. Born May 12, 1946 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Rick grew up in New Jersey. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and honorably served during the Vietnam era. He was united in marriage to Helen O’Connor on October 23, 1982 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. His occupation as an over-the-road truck driver led to their settling down in Altoona, Iowa, where they lived together until Helen’s passing in 2017. Rick took great pride in caring for his beloved wife and will fondly be remembered for his kindness. He enjoyed gardening and had a great love of dogs. He was a member of Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Altoona. Rick also volunteered at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown prior to living there. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Michael O'Connor of Ledgewood, NJ, Maureen O'Connor of Morristown, NJ, Kathleen (Nicholas) O'Connor of London, UK and Kevin (Kristin) O'Connor of Concord, NH; as well as his grandchildren: Richard, Catherine, Elise, Robert and Lauren.  He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Helen; his son, Angelo Hoagland; his parents and siblings. Special thanks for the exceptional care and support Rick received by all his caregivers at the Iowa Veterans Home and Iowa River Hospice, especially Nikki, Amy and Christy.
