Richard Allen “Newb” Newbrough, age 67 of Montour, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at UnityPoint Health – Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Per Newb’s wishes, cremation rites have taken place. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home.
Newb was born on May 31, 1956, in Fort Dodge, the son of Donald and Helen (Loeschen) Newbrough. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1974. Newb proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1975 to 1979. Following his honorable discharge, he graduated from Iowa Central Community College with his associate’s degree (1981) and from the University of Northern Iowa with his bachelor’s degree (1984).
Newb was united in marriage with Crystal Sondgeroth on November 7, 1987 in Roselle, IA. From this union, they welcomed a daughter, Nikki and a son, Dylan.
Newb was a teacher at the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo. More recently, Miller Middle School where he retired from teaching in the special education department.
Newb was a dedicated contributor to the Times Republican for 25 years, as a wrestling guru keeping up to date on all the meets and stats. He was at every sporting event for his kids through their high school and college careers. As he was a great husband and dad, he took on the amazing title of grandpa! He loved his grandchildren and being able to run around with them.
Newb was always there cheering his family on through their endeavors; Recently, his family took on the role of cheering him on through his battle with cancer.
Newb was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Mike Besaw, Patrick Besaw and Jackie Opperman. Left to cherish his memory, his wife, Crystal; children, Nikki (Joel) Rasmussen and Dylan Newbrough (Keshia Fields); grandchildren, Ava and Jill Rasmussen; siblings, Kathy (Andy) Eck, Dave (Aimee) Newbrough and Bob (Amy) Newbrough; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Family of Richard “Newb” Newbrough for later designation.
