Richard Armand Powell was born October 19, 1932 in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He was the son of Norman Purl and Ethel (Pike) Powell. Dick attended high school in New York before deciding to serve his country in the armed forces. He proudly served 12 years in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War. In 1953, Dick married Shirlee J. Barry, Yakima, Washington and together they had five children. In 1972 Richard married Joyce (Lego) Powell, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in Rockville, Maryland. After his service in the Marine Corps, Dick began a long and successful career in sales and real estate working in both Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area before going into real estate in the mountains of Colorado. Towards the end of his working career, Dick worked as a sales manager in North Liberty, Iowa and drove a shuttle bus for the Cedar Rapids airport. Both Dick and Joyce made their home in Iowa City and enjoyed being snowbirds in Florida for many years. Dick also enjoyed good food and company, music, golfing, reading, gardening, card tricks, coin collecting, and storytelling. Dick was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and an animal lover. He was a jokester who didn’t know a stranger and above all loved his family. Dick always had a reason to smile at life and could light up any room he walked into.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years Joyce Powell and his five children and their families: David (Hilary) Powell of Marshalltown, Iowa; Linda (Mike) Wice of Oviedo, Florida; Sherry (Pedro Pascual) Powell of Winsted, Connecticut; Kelly Powell of Manassas Park, Virginia; and John Powell of Marysville, Washington; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; his brother Jack (Sue) Powell; and his sister-in-law Colleen Powell.
