Richard L. Schewe, 75, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013 at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown surrounded by his Veterans of Foreign Wars family.A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, at the funeral home in Marshalltown. Memorials may be directed to the VFW Post #839 in Marshalltown. Schewe was born on October 27, 1937 in Liscomb, Iowa; he was the son of Virgil and Marie (Scott) Schewe. Richard attended school in the Montour School District, graduating with the class of 1956. Richard served our country honorably in the United States Army Infantry Division from 1959 to 1965. He had worked and retired from Lennox Industries after 38 years of service. Richard was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #839 and the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46, and had a large collection of military memorabilia and would enjoy magazines that talked about the military service. Richard would often reminisce about his trip to Woodstock, and always loved Rock and Roll music. Richard was the only survivor left in his family. He always told his VFW comrades they were his family and were his only socialization. Richard will be remembered for his loyal dedication to his post as his life revolved around his duties as a member. Many in the community would recognize his dedication as being the coordinator of all the Honor Guard funerals that bid veterans farewell in rain, snow and blazing heat- something he was passionate about and took pride in. Richard had been the commander of the Honor Guard for the past 4 years; he has served in the Honor Guard for the past 12 years and had been involved in more than 500 farewells to those who had served our country.In death Richard rejoins his parents and his grandparents.
