Richard Bruce Thompson, age 79, of Marshalltown, passed away suddenly with his loving family at his side, on Monday, December 27th, 2021 at UnityPoint Health, Marshalltown. Services for Richard will take place on Monday, January 3 at 1:00 P.M. at New Hope Christian Church in Marshalltown, with Pastor Kerry Jech officiating. Friends and family are also invited to attend a visitation one hour prior beginning at 12:00 P.M. Full military honors will be provided by the combined VFW / American Legion Honor Guard of the surrounding area. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Born March 7, 1942 to Obie and Harold Thompson, Richard grew up on the family farm near Kingsley, Iowa with his brothers and attended college at South Dakota State to study electrical engineering. His career as an electrical engineer included Control Data, Fisher Control/Emerson and Compressor Control until his retirement at age 69.He was a United States Air Force Veteran and proudly served his country, honorably discharged as a lieutenant. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Keenan in LeMars, IA on December 30, 1968. They made their home in Minneapolis before moving to Marshalltown in the summer of 1974. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage until Kathryn passed away in 2019. He was a member of New Hope Christian Church since its founding and was loved and cherished by a lifetime of family, special friends and his pets. Left to cherish his memory are four children: Andrea DeVries, Stephen Thompson (former wife Karen), Valerie (Kirk) Jones and Chris (Brad) Arment; seven grandchildren- Dustin, Jesse, Ashley, Alex, Lexi, Aaron and Joshua; five precious great-grandchildren- Hallie, Grace, Elsa, Dylan, Charlotte; his brother Harold Thompson (Cindy) and numerous other family and friends. In Heaven he joins his cherished wife Kathryn, his parents Obie and Harold Thompson and his brothers Rolland Thompson and Duane Thompson. Lovingly written by the family
