Mr. Richard Walkup, 87, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, April 19, at the Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 23rd, at St. Henrys Catholic Church with Fr. Don Czapla officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. A rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with the family present. Richard P. Walkup was born July 11, 1921, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Archie and May (Brady) Walkup. He graduated from St. Marys High School in 1939. His early years were spent farming with his dad. On July 9th, 1944, he was united in marriage to Louise Butler. They spent their entire married life in Marshalltown. He served his country during World War II. Richard was a rural letter carrier for 20 years. He was a member of St. Henrys Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus (4th Degree), American Legion and Rural Letter Carriers. He treasured his family and enjoyed traveling, baseball and watching old movies. He was kind, compassionate and a loving husband, father and grandfather. Left to celebrate his life is his wife of 64 years, Louise, daughter Helen (John) Studts of Marshalltown, sons John (Connie) Walkup of Georgetown, Texas, and Jim (Brenda) Walkup of Marshalltown, grandchildren: Lisa Studts, Julie (Tony) Shinn, Patrick (Amanda) Walkup, Troy Walkup, Trent (Jennifer) Walkup, Sara (Jim) Carothers, Katie (Shawn) Mielke, and seven great-grandchildren: Emily and Ryan Shinn, Eli and Luke Walkup, Trey Carothers and Brady and Chloe Mielke and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Gayle McGlumphy and sisters: Eleanor Regan, Edna Loney, Erma Bloom and Honora in infancy.
