Ricky "Rick" Lee Smith

Ricky “Rick” Lee Smith, 66, of Marshalltown, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at his home and under the care of the Iowa River Hospice Home. He was met in heaven by his dogs: Lucy, Smitty and Tewlz.

Memorial services for Rick will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service; beginning at 3:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family. Rick Smith was born on February 9, 1959 in Marshalltown. He was the son of Max and Ilean (Johnson) Smith. Rick was united in marriage to Kathy Kauffman on November 4, 1981. Rick had previously worked at the Iowa Veterans Home as a CNA and RTW for twelve years, Journeyman electrician, the dialysis center and retired from Almaco. Rick was very active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and was even a Girl Scout Dad. Rick always made sure he was at his kids and grandkids sporting events and celebrations. He enjoyed woodworking, avid outdoorsman, fishing and camping. Rick loved cooking with his dutch oven, whether it was cobbler, chili, lasagna, chicken and noodles or bread. Rick also enjoyed watching cooking shows, YouTube and Netflix.

Rick is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathy. Children: Nichole (Jaron) Bane of Columbus, Ohio, Jennifer Smith of Marshalltown and Nicholas Smith of Marshalltown. Grandchildren: Kanin (Malena Gaona) Mann, Khaidencey Garrett, Ryder Garrett and Madix Bane. Siblings: Mary Smith of Kansas, Sandy Fisher of Hiawatha, Iowa and Luann (Wayne) George of Marshalltown. Rick is also survived by his father-in-law: Ronald Kauffman of Marshalltown; uncle: Londell (Ellen) Johnson of Marshalltown as well as his sister-in-law’s, brother-in-law’s, nieces, nephews and cousins. He also is leaving behind his dogs: Bee and Emma.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents: Max and Ilean; brother: Larry Smith; brother-in-law: Mike Fisher; mother-in-law: Leona Kauffman, along with his aunts and uncles.
