Rita Johnson

Rita Johnson, 82, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on the morning of May 19, 2022 at Mercy One Hospice in Mason City, Iowa. Services for Rita will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 beginning at 2:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Rita’s name may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown. Rita Mae Fisher was born October 6, 1939 to parents Lester and Lucille (Nowlan) Fisher in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children in the family and grew up in Marshalltown. Rita attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated in 1957. On June 27, 1964, Rita was united in marriage to the love of her life Larry Johnson at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Together they began their life and family raising their children Trina and Patrick. Caring for her children and her family was her number one priority in life. She often would serve as an overnight caregiver as her kids grew older. Her faith life was a strongpoint and she was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parrish: St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. She also was a member of the Woman of the Moose in Marshalltown alongside her husband Larry. In her free time, Rita enjoyed planting flowers and working in her gardens, going on camping trips every summer with her family, fishing, boating with family and friends, spending time together as a family, going to her children and her grandchildren’s sporting events, and going to family reunions. She loved her two Boston terriers Zoe and Jiggs, making Jiffy blueberry muffins with her grandson Ziek, and looking for a great deal at either a garage sale, goodwill, or the salvation army. Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Trina (Rick) Johnson-Slocum and Pat (Shawn) Johnson; her grandchildren, Zach Slocum, Hannah Johnson, and Ziek Slocum; her sister, Ann Mc Donnell; alongside numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her late husband Larry Johnson; her parents, Lester and Lucille; and her sisters Dottie Swanson and Betty Rhiner.
