Robert Atkinson, 85, of Marshalltown, died Friday morning, February 7, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Dr. Rich King of the 1st Presbyterian Church officiating. Full military honors by the combined Harry C. Harter VFW #839 and Frank Lewis Glick American Legion Post #46 will be presented. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday. Born on August 22, 1928, in Marshalltown, he was one of eight children born to Earl and Letha (Hulin) Atkinson. On July 13, 1953, he was married to the love of his life, Betty Bingham. They made their home in Marshalltown where he was employed with Bos Trucking, Heuer Trucking and later Corbin Trucking in Waterloo. Bob was honored for driving 33 years without an accident. He retired on December 6, 1986, after 38 years and millions of miles on the road. During the Korean Conflict, he served our country honorably in the United States Army as a sergeant in the tank division. He was a patriotic man who was exceptionally proud of his two Marines grandsons who also serve our country honorably. He enjoyed winters in Texas, time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and visits to Meskwaki. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Connie (Lynn) Jensen of Marshalltown; his grandsons: Robert (Sally) Jensen of Marshalltown, and their children, Ashley and Andrew; Sgt. Stephen Jensen, USMC and his fiance Sgt. Rachael Dividio, USMC, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania; as well as his sisters: Meredith Halter of Melbourne, and Karen King of Pasadena, California. In death, he rejoined his parents, beloved wife Betty who died on May 23, 2005, three brothers: Buster, Dick, and Jack; two sisters: Jean and Helen; and a sibling at infancy.
