Robert "Bob" Buchwald

Robert “Bob” Buchwald, age 85, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at The Willows of Marshalltown, where he resided with his wife. He was under the care of St. Croix Hospice.

Per the wishes of Bob and his family, cremation rites have been accorded under the care of the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A family-led celebration of life will take place on Saturday, June 24 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at El Portal Restaurant in Marshalltown, Iowa. Born Robert Fredrick Buchwald on June 24, 1937 in Marshalltown, Iowa, he was the son of Freeman and Mildred (Gile) Buchwald. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1956, he honorably served his country for two years in the United States Army. Upon his return, Bob obtained a degree in Accounting from AIB. He began working at Emerson – Fisher Controls, where he met the love of his life, Mary Callahan. They were united in marriage on November 12, 1966 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple was blessed with two children. Quiet and reserved in nature, Bob was a kind and loving husband and father.

In his free time, Bob enjoyed collecting baseball cards and playing slow-pitch softball. He was also in several bowling leagues over the years. After retiring in 1994, he and Mary took numerous extended-stay vacations to Las Vegas. He loved acting as tour guide and showing people around. To say he was an avid Boston Red Sox fan was an understatement. He was content anywhere he could get popcorn and watch baseball.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary; his children: Lynette Buchwald of West Des Moines, IA and Chris Buchwald of Marshalltown, IA; his sister, Sharon (Roger) Dent of West Des Moines, IA; his nephew Scott (Karen) Meeks of Altoona, IA and their children: Ryan Meeks of Pleasant Hill, IA and Amanda (Kyle) Meeks of St. Louis, MO; two aunts: Dorothy Coughlin of Greeley, CO and Betty Brown of Dayton, OH and cousins, as well as friends.

In eternal life, he is reunited with his mother and stepfather, Mildred and Glenn Staebler and his birth father Freeman (Evelyn) Buchwald.
