Robert “Bob” Denton Duke, Jr., age 86, of Marshalltown, passed away at Iowa River Valley Hospice on Tuesday, August 25th, 2020.  To honor his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a private service and burial will take place at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville, TN.  Bob’s family will hold a memorial service for him at a later date.  Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.  The Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Bob and his family.  For additional information or to leave a condolence, please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call 641-844-1234. Bob was born on August 14, 1934 to parents Robert Denton Duke Sr. and Margaret (Sanders) Duke in Durham, NC.  He grew up in Nashville, TN and graduated high school from Battleground Academy in Franklin, TN.  Bob honorably served in the United States Army.  He went on to receive his degree in Engineering from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN.  Bob was united in marriage to the love of his life, Sally Goodpasture on June 25, 1959 in Nashville, TN.  They briefly lived in Sioux Falls, SD before their move to Marshalltown, IA, where they now call home.  Together they raised 4 beautiful daughters. Bob worked as an Industrial Engineer at Emerson – Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, working most often with quality control management. He retired in 1992.  Bob was an active member of Central Christian Church, the Lions Club and the Antique Automobile Club.  He collected antique cars and loved motorcycles.  In his free time, he enjoyed doing yardwork and was a skilled woodworker.  He could fix anything and everything.  Bob was a true southern gentleman. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 61 years, Sally; his daughters: Sally (Brian) Schroeder, Linda (Mark) Trant, Julie (Tim) McGlynn and Katie Duke; 10 grandchildren: Ben (Michelle) Schroeder, Zach (Emily) Shroeder, Mari Schroeder, Duke (Christina) Trant, Sam Trant, Judd Trant, Cade McGlynn, Bodie McGlynn, Hadley Shaffer and Holt Shaffer; two great-grandchildren: Carter Trant and Brock Trant and three sisters-in-law: Ann Goodpasture, Martha Goodpasture and Gigi Goodpasture. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret and his brother-in-law Albert V. Goodpasture.
