Robert Bates Hartsell was born November 19, 1953 in Kirksville, Missouri. He was the eldest son of three children born to Robert and Wanita Hartsell. He graduated high school at Kirksville in 1972. In his youth due to several vehicle mishaps, he was on a first name basis with local law enforcement. He served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. He went on to study at Truman State University, formerly NE Missouri State Univ. He was an active member of the Veterans Club and the fraternity Delta Omicron Mu (DOM).

After coming to Marshalltown, Robert obtained his electrical license based on the influence of working with his late grandfather Paul James of Kirksville. He was a quick study and served as a Chemistry lab assistant with Dr. McCurdy in Marshalltown while attending classes. He worked as an EMT on the Marshalltown ambulance service. Later, he worked for the CNW railroad as an Engineer.

In his free time, he loved to play chess, read books/magazines, tell off color jokes and in healthier days slalom ski at Thousand Hills State Park. Robert would be described as a passionate Republican, an ardent Second Amendment supporter and that he never met a stranger.

Robert is survived by his partner Shawn; his son, Robert W. Hartsell; his mother, Wanita Hartsell; and siblings, Tracy (Rick) Trease and Todd (Sara) Hartsell; two nieces, one nephew, numerous cousins and many great friends.
