Robert Newell Stevens, 89, of Marshalltown, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Grandview Heights Rehab and Healthcare in Marshalltown. Visitation for Bob will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Joan Stevens. Robert Stevens was born on January 19, 1928 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa to Charles and Blanche Stevens. He attended school in the Brooklyn area. On June 5, 1952, Bob was united in marriage to Joan DeCoster in Victor, Iowa. Bob had worked for the railroad for fifteen years as well as retiring from Bruin Manufacturing in 1996. Bob enjoyed playing cards and cribbage, playing pool, bingo, watching the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed watching his children in 4-H. Bob and Joan loved to roller skate in their younger years and had won many trophies. They also enjoyed dancing the polka to big band music and raised a large garden together and sold their vegetables at the farmers market in Marshalltown and Grinnell. Bob was very sociable and knew no stranger. Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan. Children: Brad Stevens of Marshalltown, Lee Ann (Kirk) Coughlin of Ames and Mark (Darcy) Stevens of Marshalltown. Grandchildren: Jason (Jessie) Stevens, Eric (Kim) Stevens, Nick (Steph) Stevens, Brett (Tara) Goecke, Jessica (Keth) Houseal, David Stevens and Angela (Nick) Patrick. He is also survived by many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends. Bob is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Blanche, grandson Nathan Goecke and siblings Charles, Darlene and John.
