Roger Charles Edel, 83, died on Jan. 18th at the Iowa Veterans Home, following a long illness. Mr. Edel was born on August 31, 1927, at Haverhill, to John and Augusta (Knoll) Edel, the third of eight children. After graduating from St. Marys High School, he served in the Navy at the end of World War II and had fond memories of time stationed in Italy. Following his discharge, he briefly attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and then returned to Marshalltown, where he married Rita Quinn on September 8, 1947.Mr. Edel went to work for his new father-in-law, Anthony Quinn, and eventually owned and operated Quinn Radiator for 30 years before opening Quinn Lawn and Leisure. Upon his retirement, he managed the Knights of Columbus Hall for several years. He was a fifty-year member of the Forth Degree of the Knights of Columbus and served as the Grand Knight. He served the Marshalltown community as a dedicated member of St. Marys and St. Henrys parishes and, during Lenihan High Schools five years of operation, he was an active booster and involved parent. Mr. Edel was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rita, Marshalltown; eight children: Anthony (Carol) of Baton Rouge, LA; Donald of Marshalltown; Thomas (Jeanine) of Chicago; Lawrence (Sveta) of Arlington Heights, IL; Mary (Thomas) Skorczeski of St. Paul, MN; Richard (Geof Shives) of Chicago; David (Kathy) of Waupaca, WI; and Carol (Todd) Geil of Knoxville, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Arvalene Vasek of Omaha, NE; Maxine (George) Liston and Jeanette (Keith) Loney both of Marshalltown. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, January 21, with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Henrys Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22 with private interment in the Riverside Cemetery Mausoleum niche.
