Roger L. Horn, 79, of Marshalltown, died early Tuesday morning, October 21st, 2008, at Israel Hospice House in Ames.A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 25th, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Batcheler officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph 641-844-1234. Roger was born on February 5th, 1929, in Marshalltown, the son of Marshall Walter Horn and Margaret Ethel Dimit Horn. He graduated from Rhodes High School in 1947. He attended Grinnell College for one semester and then entered the University of Iowa in 1948, where as a freshman, he met his future wife, Dolores Peters. They have been married for 57 years. They have one son, Jeff Horn.Roger began his education career at Quasqueton, Iowa, as a teacher and coach from 1952-1954. In 1954, he moved to New Providence, where he was also a teacher and coach. During the summers, he attended graduate school at Drake University and the University of Iowa, where he received his Masters Degree in Educational Administration in 1959. While still at New Providence Community School, he became principal and later served as superintendent. Roger and his family spent 13 wonderful years in New Providence from 1954-1967. In 1967, he became the high school principal at Rockford Community School. In 1968, he had the opportunity to move back to his home area of State Center, where he served as high school principal of West Marshall Community School from 1968-1983. He then worked for the State Department of Education, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation from 1984-1991. He retired from this position.Roger was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marshalltown, State Center Lions Club, Lincoln Valley Golf, and the Association of School Administrators. Through the years, he served on many committees within these organizations.Roger loved playing golf and tennis, getting together with friends, and spending many wonderful winter months in Arizona. Being with his family was very special to him. He was an avid Hawkeye fan since his freshman year at the University of Iowa, attending Iowa football games for 55 years. He enjoyed keeping track of the area high school activities, and especially enjoyed visiting with former students.Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Dolores; his son Jeff (Sue) Horn; his 4 grandchildren; his 6 great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law Dorothy (Walter) Horn, Eileen (Eldon) Horn, and Rosetta (Darrell) Peters; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters, and two brothers. Memorials may be sent to Iowa River Hospice, Quakerdale, or First United Methodist Church of Marshalltown.
