Roger B. Smith, 91, longtime Garwin resident, passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 3rd, at the Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood, Florida. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 10th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Born on July 14th, 1924, at Garwin, Iowa, he was the son of Andrew and Lillie Mae (Kirby) Smith. He received his education in the area of his birth. On Christmas Eve of 1949, he was united in marriage to Donna Lowry. They made their home in Garwin where he was a member of the Garwin United Methodist Church. Mr. Smith was employed in farming beginning in 1951. Prior to farming he worked for Joe Wienke at the quarry operating bulldozers. In 1971 Roger and Donna purchased their farm southwest of Garwin and resided there until 1998 when they sold the acreage and moved to Garwin. He enjoyed time spent with family and woodworking in his shop. Four years ago, Roger moved to Rotonda, Florida, to spend his last years in the comfort of his daughter's home. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jackie (Larry) Allen of Rotonda, FL, granddaughter Jacey Junge of Cedar Rapids and great-grandson Scott and sister-in-law Evelyn Roy of Gladbrook as well as many nieces and nephews. In death, Roger rejoined his beloved Donna who passed on Valentine's Day of 2012, his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
