Rollan "Rollie" Freel

January 17, 1932 — September 11, 2024

Rollan “Rollie” George Freel, 92, of Marshalltown, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.


Funeral services for Rollan will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 10:45 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the family for distribution at a later date. Rollan Freel was born on January 17, 1932 at home north of Runnells. He was the son of Alva and Ruth (Blood) Freel, the second son of three with seven sisters. Rollan graduated from Van Meter High School in 1950. On November 21, 1954, Rollie was united in marriage to Betty “Elaine” Hohanshelt in Des Moines. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1960 and went on to receive his Master’s Degree from the University of North Dakota in 1966. A truly gifted teacher, Rollie taught in the Marshalltown Community School District school system for 33 years primarily teaching Mathematics and Physics at the Senior High.


Rollie and Elaine enjoyed his family’s reunions in Tin Cup, Colorado each summer for over 20 years. They also enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Michigan, Virginia and London. Rollie had a keen interest in wood carving and woodworking and interests in Antique and Special Interest cars, Astronomy, working jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku and golfing.


Rollie spent many hours preparing for and teaching Bible Studies. Prayer was one of his favorite subjects, he was always looking and listening for deeper meaning.


Rollie is survived by his children: Tim (Anne) of Stafford, Virginia, Cindy (Paul) Adams of Canton, Michigan and Dave (Cheryl) of Marshalltown. Grandchildren: Emily and Daniel Freel, Mark (Rachel) Adams, Krystal Adams, and Garrett Koehn. Great grandchildren: Daniel, Isaiah, and Micah Adams.


Rollie is preceded in death by his wife: Elaine, his parents: Alva and Ruth, a brother Johnny and sisters Edna Underwood, Mildred Freel, Nancy Becker and Florence DeBoost.
