Rosalie Kay (Kamper) Spence, 79, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away November 4, 2021, at Unity Point Health Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was born on March 24, 1942, to William C. and Lois V. (Richards) Kamper in Oelwein, Iowa. She was the only one of six siblings to be born in the hospital. All six children’s names started with the letter R and had seven letters: Raymond, Richard, Roberta, Randall, Roderic and Rosalie. Rosalie graduated from Arlington High School in 1960. She attended Pitzie’s Cosmetology School in Waterloo, Iowa, graduating in 1961 and worked as a hairdresser at the Masonic Temple in Marshalltown, Iowa for 12 years. Rosalie and Bryant J. “BJ” Rutherford were united in marriage January 30, 1971. She worked in the lounge as needed at the Shady Oaks Restaurant which BJ owned. BJ passed away May 25, 1991. Rosalie and Glen E. Spence were married January 27, 2000 and Glen passed away May 29, 2018. Rosalie grew up in Arlington, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Arlington where she was very involved in Luther League. Growing up in a small town, there were very few kids to play with. To occupy her time, she would ask neighbors if they had anything they wanted to throw away. If they did, it went into her playhouse. Her playhouse was a shed in the summer and the attic in the winter. Rosalie enjoyed going to auctions and antique shops. She worked at Van Meter Auction from 1992 – 1998.Rosalie was an avid quilter. She began quilting in 2001, when her sister, Roberta got her involved while wintering in Texas. She and Glen spent their winter months in Mercedes, Texas from 2000 – 2012. Rosalie is survived by her sister, Roberta Koehler of Spearfish, South Dakota; brother, Roderic (Ruth) Kamper of Strawberry Point, Iowa; sister-in-law, Edna Kamper of Algona, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her husbands: BJ Rutherford (1991) and Glen Spence (2018); her parents, William C. (1974) and Lois V. (Richards) Kamper (1990); brothers: Randall (1944), Richard (1994), Raymond (1999); brother-in-law, Gerald Koehler (2012); and sister-in-law, Elgene Kamper (2020). Memorials may be sent to Iowa River Hospice, 502 Plaza Heights Road, Marshalltown, Iowa 50158. Burial will be Saturday, November 13th at the Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington, Iowa. There will be a graveside service beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Margaret Yackel-Juleen from St. John’s Lutheran Church, Arlington, Iowa officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael, Brandon, Christopher and Aaron Haigh, Eric Koehler and Chris Rahm.
