Russell Reece (Buck) Weeden, 91, of Marshalltown, passed away at The Willows under the care of St. Croix Hospice on May 7, 2024.
Buck was born on May 12, 1932 in Nevada, Iowa to Russell and Olive Weeden. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1950. Buck attended Iowa State University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and received his B.S. degree in 1954.
Buck was married to Betty Miller in 1960 and made their home in Marshalltown. They were blessed with eight children, Jeff, Kristin, Scott, Julie, Eric, Laura, Brett and Brant. Buck retired from Fisher Controls as a Senior Buyer in 1986.
Gifted in many sports, Buck chose to play and lettered in baseball at Iowa State. He remained passionate for the Cyclones throughout his life. His love for Iowa State led to many of his children and grandchildren following in his footsteps with degrees from ISU.
As a young boy Buck’s home away from home was the Marshalltown YMCA where he had been an active member since 1939. After college, Buck continued to play league baseball, basketball, handball and racquetball for many years. He played racquetball well into his 70’s often catching younger men off guard with his speed, strength and finesse. Buck understood the importance of exercise and continued going to the Y to workout and lift weights while in his 90’s. Buck recently made national news for having been the longest active member of the Marshalltown Y (84 years!).
Buck is survived by his children: Jeff (Shari), Kristin (Billy Ray Inman), Scott (Becky), Julie (John Jindrich), Eric (Nickie), Laura (Richard Smith), Brant and Brett; 13 grandchildren: Jamie Jo Hatchitt, Jacob Weeden, Christopher Inman, Joel Inman, Elizabeth Brown, Johnnie Arnett, Paul Jindrich, Marshal Weeden, Caleb Janssen, Sydney Smith, Clayton Smith, Tyne Weeden; and many great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of The Willows for the exceptional care Buck received.
Private services will be held by the family.
