Ruth Jean Beck

Ruth Jean Beck, 93, formerly of rural Garwin, passed away October 29, 2016. She was born December 10, 1922 in Minot, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Oscar and Mabel Ruthenberg. After her mothers death she lived with her grandparents Bill and Nellie Ruthenberg. They moved to Garwin in 1927. She graduated from Garwin High School in 1941. She took a normal training course from UNI and taught one year in the Dobson Country School. On March 13, 1943 she was united in marriage to Roger Beck at Lancaster, MO. They made their home farming near Garwin all their married life. After Rogers retirement in March of 1985 and his death in 1999, she continued to reside on the farm until she moved to Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in April 2014. She was a member of the Garwin Christian Church and the Buzzing Duzzin Club. She taught Sunday School for many years, worked at the Election Night Supper every year, worked for several eating establishments and was a substitute cook at the Garwin School. She enjoyed reading, needle work and spending time with family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Oscar and Mabel, grandparents Bill and Nellie, husband Roger: a daughter Diana Beck (Jay Haynes) and two great-grandchildren Matthew Cook and Natasha Dudley. Survivors include: daughters, Marcia Giles of San Diego, CA, Debbi Nugent (Steve) of Boone: son Bill Beck (Teri) of Garwin: Three sister-in-laws, Carla Wilkerson, of Garwin, Pat Smith of Marshalltown, and Rue Jean Hill of Grinnell: 13 grandchildren, 31 greatgrandchildren, and 4 great-greatgrandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday November 4, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a public visitation being held Thursday November 3, from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home.
