Sandra “Sandy” Duff, 82, of Newton, formerly of Marshalltown, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2022 at MercyOne Newton Medical Center under the exceptional care of EveryStep Hospice. A celebration of life for Sandy will take place on Saturday, April 16 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Sandra Kay Barnert was born on December 17, 1939 in Fort Collins, Colorado to Charles Barnert and Olga Mae Deviley. At the age of 12, she moved to the Midwest, calling Missouri and then Iowa home for the remainder of her life. In her early years, Sandy waitressed, modeled and taught ballroom dance for several years at the Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Des Moines. She then started working for the Iowa Highway Commission in Marshalltown, later known as the Iowa Department of Transportation. Sandy loved her job with the Iowa DOT and dedicated over 32 years there until her retirement. She loved all living creatures and was especially fond of cats. In her free time, she enjoyed gambling, crocheting and trying new recipes. Sandy had a great sense of humor and had a love for snacks, Tweety Bird and spending time with her family. Sandy is survived by her children: Troy (Cece) Duff of Marshalltown, Renee (Robert) Slocum of Newton and David Duff of Marshalltown; seven grandchildren: Dustin, Taylor, Taima, Tegan, Tiara, Lucas and Lilly and two great-grandchildren, plus one on the way. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert Day and two grandsons: DJ and Tyler.
