Sandra "Sandy" Thompson

Sandra “Sandy” (Huffaker) Thompson, 84, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was cared for by Care Initiatives Hospice for the last 3 months of her life.

Funeral services for Sandy will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Public visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2022. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed in Sandy’s name to the Marshalltown Community Food Box. Sandra Jean Huffaker was born on September 7, 1938 in Marshalltown, Iowa to parents Clifford and Helen (Lamb) Huffaker. She graduated from Marshalltown High School.

On July 5, 1958, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, William H. Thompson, in Marshalltown. They made their home in Marshalltown their entire life and were blessed with four children: Linda, Rob, Karen and Marilyn.

In her working career she was involved with the Marshalltown Hospital and Area 6 as a media specialist and educational executive assistant.

Sandra was a member of the Marshalltown Women’s Bowling Association. She was proud to be a second-generation member of her family to be involved with genealogy and was a member of the Marshall County Genealogy Society, helping out at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. She enjoyed volunteering at the emergency food bank. Sandy loved a great book, working in her flower gardens, quilting, playing cards and spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Linda (Jim) Norem of Randall, IA, Rob (April) Thompson of Watertown, WI, Karen Bassett of Gladbrook, IA and Marilyn (Ward) Ingham of Gladbrook, IA, grandchildren; Charissa (Lucas) Baedke, Tarra (Austin) Carlson, Leland Bassett, Jessica Ingham, Jillisa (Ryan) Patchett, Brittany (Matt) Terpstra, Jaimee (Jared) Kernes, Hannah Bassett, Emily (Kyler) Mowry, Steve Ingham, Tyler (Devin) Ingham, great grandchildren; Fiston Carlson, Jasmine Bassett, Evelyn Carlson, Skyler Kernes, Ellie Terpstra, William Patchett, Theo Terpstra and Baby Mowry, siblings; Loren Huffaker, Walt (Leona) Huffaker and Gloria (Gary) Boone. She was preceded in passing by her parents, her husband of 50 years; Bill, son-in-law; Lee Bassett, sister; Deb Mercer, brother-in-law; Larry Mercer, and sister-in-law Kay Huffaker.
