In the words of Roy T. Bennett, “Be the light that helps others see; it is what gives life its deepest significance.” Sharon Leverette, 82, of Marshalltown, Iowa, was that light in a world that can have so much darkness.
Sharon passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2022 surrounded by her loving family and in the care and comfort of the Iowa River Hospice Home staff. There was singing, laughter, tears, sharing of verses and warm embraces as she passed from her family’s loving arms to the arms of her Lord and Savior.
Born Sharon Kay Quirk on April 5, 1940 in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the daughter of Raymond and Dorothy (Pelham) Quirk. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1958. Sharon worked hard over the years to provide for her family, including various restaurant positions, at TLC and as a foster grandparent. A pillar of strength and courage to her family, she passed on a strong work ethic and taught them to extend grace and kindness to everyone they meet.
Sharon lived out her deep faith on a daily basis and followed the two most important commandments: to love God and love others. She loved Jesus and her family more than anything else in this world. Her love for her family didn’t stop at her bloodline, as she took in many extended family members along the way. Selfless and warm-hearted, she would give a stranger the shirt off her back and enjoyed helping anyone who needed it. Sharon was actively involved in serving the Lord and others as a member of Restore Church. She was part of the prayer team and loved volunteering at different church-led events and at the House of Compassion. She was grateful for all the blessings her life brought and enjoyed giving back to those who needed it.
Sharon understood that life is short and that we are to live it to the fullest. She knew how to have a good time and had an infectious, joyful laugh. She also put up with a lot from friends and family over the years and she could out-sass the best of them. She was not afraid to “tell it like it is” while always extending grace and understanding. Sharon enjoyed playing cards, especially Pepper, and stayed active with several card clubs over the years. She also loved playing Bingo, coloring and reading. She was an excellent baker and cook and greatly enjoyed sharing her homemade treats with others.
Sharon loved hard and gave the best hugs. She lit up a room with her presence and her family meant everything to her. She will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched, including her children: Jeff (Dee) Linton of Marshalltown, Michelle Leverette of Grand Rapids, OH and Tanya Leverette (Dan Johnson) of Marshalltown; her beloved grandchildren: Alex (Marina) Ortiz, Sean Ellis, Tyler (Kenzie) Linton, James (Kayli) Ortiz, Connor Linton, Taylor Leverette, Jasmin Kenzie, Halle Linton, Alex (Sara) Kenzie and Zach Kenzie; her precious great-grandchildren: April, Josiah, Lewis and Walter; her sister, LaDonna Gotshall; numerous extended family members and friends who have become family.
In eternal life she is reunited with her parents, Raymond and Dorothy; her youngest daughter, Justina; and her siblings: Donald, James and Mary.
Services for Sharon will take place on Friday, October 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery. Friends and family are also invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, October 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. All attendees are invited to dress casually and encouraged to wear purple, Sharon’s favorite color.
