Sharon Kay Seffinga was born on January 14, 1940 to Willard and Vera (Greenhow) Seffinga in Marshalltown, Iowa. Sharon was the oldest of four children. She grew up in Marshalltown with her siblings Allen, Sandra and Arlene “Shorty”. Sharon attended Marshalltown High School.
Sharon was united in marriage to Billy K. Luther on October 17, 1960 in Albany, Missouri. The couple made their home in Garwin, Iowa and then Laurel, Iowa. In 1969 Bill, Sharon and their children moved to Texas so Bill could fulfill his lifelong dream of training horses. In 1972 the family moved back to their home state of Iowa and settled on an acreage near Gilman where they raised their children. Sharon worked for many years as a seamstress at DeLongs Clothing Factory.
In her younger years, Sharon loved to attend horse shows with her husband, cheer on her children at their sporting events and activities, go bowling and play in card clubs with friends. She loved to redecorate their home and always threw herself passionately into various projects. It wasn’t unusual to stop by her house to find a newly knocked down wall, a completely gutted room or an extensive painting project in progress. Sharon also enjoyed traveling to New Mexico and California to visit her sisters, to Kansas City with her grandchildren and to Florida with her cousin and good friend Barb.
In her free time Sharon liked to sew, she was known for making show clothes for her family, formal wear and window treatments. She could often be found working on various craft projects and painting ceramics in her home studio. She also enjoyed tending her flower garden, a good cup of coffee (no matter the season or time of day) and baking various treats, especially rhubarb crisp and Christmas candies. Sharon loved to host gatherings and barbeques for her family.
While she could often be heard grumbling softly during the last minute event preparations she was never happier than when her entire family gathered together.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Nicki (Curt) Smith of Kansas City, Missouri, Terri Stonewall of Keller, Texas, Dawn (Dave) Pyle of Marshalltown, Iowa, Chris (Brian) Deeter of Laurel, Iowa, Charlie (Carrie) Luther of Gilman, Iowa and Todd (Nicole) Luther of Grinnell, Iowa; her grandchildren Ashley (Scott) Redding, Brad Osgood, Shelby (Matt) Smith, Carley Hare, Charles Osgood, Justin (Hannah) Aman, Clayton Aman, Cody Aman, Maddie Wiegand, Morgan Luther, Madison Luther, Kaia Hoffmann and Bela Hoffmann; and her great grandchildren Marshall, Miles, Kahlea, Bronx, Emma, Aubree, Chase, Karah, Stetson and Creek. She will be fondly remembered by her sister, Sandy Sanders of Albuquerque, New Mexico as well as many friends and cousins. In death, Sharon rejoins her husband, Bill Luther, her parents, Willard and Vera Seffinga, her siblings Al Seffinga and Arlene “Shorty” Seffinga and her grandson Bret Hare.
…Lovingly written by her family
