Sherry was born Sherry Kay McNeal on February 12, 1936, and grew up in Tama, Iowa. As a teenager, she worked in the Mills family businesses, with her favorite job being at the Tama movie theater. She had a deep love for animals and took great pride in her beautiful black Thoroughbred/Morgan mare, CoCo, whom she had for 30 years. Some of Sherry’s happiest memories included swimming in Cherry Lake and riding her bicycle around Tama—with her pet chicken perched on the handlebars.

Sherry met the love of her life, Rogor, a cute Gilman boy, at a popular restaurant hang out on the east side of town. They married in 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Rogor was stationed with the United States Air Force. After returning to Iowa, they purchased a farm northwest of Albion, where they began raising their family. They later moved to rural Melbourne.

Sherry was a devoted wife and mother who was never afraid of hard work. In addition to helping Rogor on the farm and raising their four children, she raised bottle calves and also worked outside the home. Her working years began with Marshall Manufacturing and eventually led to the family business, Ricken Tiling in Melbourne, where she continued working long after most people would have happily retired.

Sherry remained remarkably sharp and independent throughout her life. Until her death, she continued taking care of the farming taxes and finances. She had an upbeat sense of humor, a quick mind, and a passion for cooking, including her Swedish meatballs. She especially enjoyed trying new recipes and sharing what she made with those around her.

Above all, Sherry loved her family.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Rogor; her children, Lori (James) Ricken of Haverhill, Kristi (Jack) Petrie of Haverhill, John of Clinton, Iowa, and James of Colombus, Kansas; her sister, Beverly of Tama, Iowa; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Sherry was preceded in death by her mother, Molly, and her infant son, Brian Wayne Shuler.

Sherry will be remembered for her strength, humor, independence, love of family, and the many stories and memories that made her life uniquely her own.
