Shirleen Brown

Shirleen (Flanagan) Brown 88, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on September 7, 2023, at Grandview Heights with her family by her side. A visitation for family and friends will take place at Mitchell Family Funeral Home of Marshalltown, Iowa on Wednesday September 13, 2023, from 9 a.m. until 11a.m. with services to follow at 11a.m. Memorials in Shirleen’s name may be directed to the family for a later designation. Shirleen was born November 22, 1934, in Hardin County at the home of her parents: Alva and Reta (Haynes) Flanagan. She received an education at both New Providence and at the farm. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Chester “Chet” Brown on June 29, 1952 on a farm near New Providence. For many years she worked as a secretary for Brown & Sons Camper and Auto of Marshalltown.

She took pride in being a home maker and was considered a great cook while baking her famous chocolate “wacky” cake and delicious pork chops. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and attending all of their sport activities. She also liked to attend slow pitch softball games, watching T.V., word puzzles, adult coloring books, playing cards, and her specialty was playing Mexican Train Dominoes with her own house rules.

Shirleen is survived by her children: Linda (Rick) Nelson, Larry (Karen) Brown, Deb Brown- Fisher and Betty Brown, Grandchildren: Shonya (Shawn) Hoskins, Justin (Michelle) Brown, Jessie (Dustin) Buffington, Angie (Desmond Ofei) Brown, Shane (Tammy) Brown, Terry “TJ” (Rachel) Brown, Chester (Christina) Brown, Michelle (Bob Barnard) Brown, Terrissa (Drew) Riemenschneider, Christopher Brown, Marissa Brown, and Shannon (Austin) Grimes, Great grandchildren: Kylee (Sam) Sheer, Kamren (Shelby Larson) Hoskins, Lexie Brown, Allie Brown, Triton Buffington, Kendel Cram, Jocelyn Buffington, Elijah Ofei- Brown, Jeremiah Ofei- Brown, Aspen (Jake) Mason, Brad (Ashley) Holloway, Kaitlyn (Rusty) Mann, Brianne (Dawhan Oliver) Brown, Emma Brown, Max Brown, Ashley (Colton Hartwell) Brown, Easton Brown, Chester Brown, Raylinn Barnard, Rogan Riemenschneider, Lucas Brown, Toby Brown, Silas Brown, Liam Grimes, Maya Grimes, Great, Great grandchildren: Carter Mason, William Mason, Jaxon Mason, Loralei Holloway, Nelly Holloway, Jay Holloway, Viviana Oliver, Olivia Mann, Alayna Hartwell, Kashton Hartwell, Kayson Hartwell, Brothers-in-law: Herscel Brown, Gearld Brown, numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirleen Brown is preceded in death by her husband Chet; Son Terry Brown; Parents; Siblings: Virginia Walker, Betty Conkin, Omadel Flanagan, Harold Flanagan, and Mary Schelling.
