She was raised and educated in the area, graduating from the St. Charles high school in 1959. On June 26, 1960, Shirley and Eugene Addy were united in marriage at the St. Charles Methodist Church. Together the family relocated to Indianola and then to State Center later on. Eventually the family settled in Marshalltown, where they spent the last 45 years. In 1994, they lost their granddaughter, Kamberlyn Addy. In 2007, Eugene passed away. Shirley was a stay at home mother who loved to cook and enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas. She took a lot of time and care making sure the house was decorated inside and out. She loved to bake and often would take her goods to her friends, family and neighbors. New Years Eve was a big holiday for her as well. The family would stay up all night playing cards, and then she would fix breakfast in the morning. Shirleys biggest joy was babysitting. She absolutely loved having kids in the house, and looking after Khole and McKenzie Robinson was one of her favorite things. Finally, Shirley was a diehard Hawkeye fan, and never missed a game when they were on the television. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kimberly (Eric) Addy Purvis, Gary (Sarina) Addy; grandchildren: Holly Addy, Tina (Jay) Staruch, Nathan (Amanda) Shover, Jared Shover; great-grandchildren: Melody, Brantlee, and Bailee; siblings: Janet (Donny) Armstrong Strable, Hattie Obrien, Beulah Veasman, Bob (Gladys) Armstrong; and many nieces and nephews. In death, Shirley rejoins her parents, William Pete and Ella (Cole) Armstrong; husband, Eugene Addy; granddaughter, Kamberlyn Addy; step-father, Creede Gibson; brothers, Harley Armstrong and Wayne Armstrong; sisters, Dorothy McClure, Bonnie Northcutt, and Fern Lyman.
