Shirley Hermsen, 79, of Marshalltown, formerly of the Garwin area, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Shirley Lee Dinsdale was born on November 25, 1936, in Tama County, Iowa; she was the daughter of Lester and Virginia (Havens) Dinsdale. Shirley attended school in the Dinsdale school district graduating with the Class of 1953. She then went on to Iowa State Teachers College and received her Teachers Certificate. Shirley had been a teacher in the Garwin school district for 29 years. On January 23, 1957, Shirley was united in marriage to Leonard Woehlk at the Amity United Presbyterian Church in rural Dinsdale. Leonard passed away in 1980, and later she was united in marriage to Edward Hermsen on March 18, 2000, at Garwin United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garwin, United Methodist Women, and The American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, jumble and crossword puzzles, spending time with her family and her grandchildren. She also enjoyed college basketball and her Hawkeyes. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 16 years, Edward Hermsen, of Marshalltown, Iowa; her children, Steven (Keri) Woehlk of Columbus, Nebraska and Chuck Woehlk of Toledo, Iowa; grandchildren, Shelby Woehlk of Spokane, Washington, Carter Woehlk of Vermillion, South Dakota, Lindsay (Bobby) Young of California, Tyler (Karly) Woehlk of Marshalltown, and Levi (Taylor Kunch) Woehlk of Garwin; great-grandchildren: Cora Young, Natalie Woehlk and Alexis Woehlk; siblings: Jim (LaNelle) Dinsdale of Traer, Leah (Glenn) Tollefson of California, Darlene (Allen) Eggers of Gladbrook, Iowa, Larry (Lavilah) Dinsdale of Reinbeck, Iowa, David (Diana) Dinsdale of New Hartford, Iowa. In death Shirley rejoins her parents, Lester and Virginia; husband, Leonard; and son, Gregory.
