Shirley Kunkel, 74, of Marshalltown, died early Friday morning, October 10th, at the MMSC. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 15th, at St. Henrys Catholic Church with Fr. Don Czapla as celebrant. She will be laid to rest in St. Josephs Cemetery at Rhodes. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil service. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Born Shirley Malechek on July 20th, 1934, at Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Carvat) Malechek. Her family moved to Rhodes at the age of three where her father was a well-known Rhodes tavern owner. She graduated from the Rhodes High School in 1951. On November 19th, 1955, she was united in marriage to Elmer Kunkel and to this union three children were born. She moved to Marshalltown in 1986. Shirley was employed at CIRSI, attended St. Henrys Catholic Church, was a member of Matts Chicks and enjoyed socializing, playing cards, gardening and the outdoors. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Doug (Laurie) Kunkel of Newton, Geri (Craig) Kunkel-Pierce of Haverhill and Mary Jo Kunkel (Terry Young) of Haverhill, step-grandchildren: Jason and Ben Matteson, Casey Edwards and Jacob and Jason Young, sisters Liz Malloy of Rhodes and Dorothy Johnston of Marshalltown, several nieces, nephews and friends. In death she has rejoined her parents, brother Joey (Kate) Malechek, sister Mary (Verle) Thursby, brother-in-law Leo Malloy and three nephews; Dennis Malloy and Jon and Michael Malechek.
