Shirley I. Settle

Shirley Keese Settle, 86, of Marshalltown, died at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, of complications from a fall, osteoporosis and arthritis. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26, at Legrand Friends Church. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Shirley was born February 12, 1924, to Gayle Speas and Arthur Keese on the Keese farm south of Ferguson. She was married to Ronald Settle on August 20, 1944, in Marshalltown. They farmed near Bangor for 13 years and near Green Mountain for 7 years before Ronald entered the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance business. She was the bookkeeper for the family and insurance business for over 50 years. Shirley and Ronald were active in the Bangor Friends and Legrand Friends Church and communities. Shirley served on Ministry and Council for several terms, stewardship committee, and served many years as representative to Iowa Yearly Meeting. For approximately 12 years she was a delegate and served on the mission board of Friends United meeting in Richmond, Indiana. Quakerdale, group homes for young people, and Camp Quaker Heights in Eldora, were endeavors close to her heart. After Ronald passed away in 1995, she moved from Shalom on Shady Oaks Road to the Embers Retirement Village. She was instrumental in organizing Bible studies and Sunday evening vesper services at the Embers. Throughout her life, Shirley welcomed family and friends around her table and into her home. She was a warm and loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter Sheila Settle, married to Howard Bull, living in Mountain View, California, her son Dan Settle married to Marilyn, living in Peoria, Arizona, and her son Mark Settle, married to Lindel Case, living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.She is also survived by her grand children and their families. They are Mandy Settle Boes married to Kevin Boes, living in Evanston, Illinois, and their children Emma 5 years, and Harrison 2 years; Shelly Settle Voss married to Ryan Voss living in Omaha, Nebraska, with son Fischer 5 years; Kevin Lee living in Ames; Karen Lee Quigley married to John Quigley, living in Ankeny, with their children Jake, 12 years and Josh, 8 years; John Bull of Mountain View, CA; Jason Bull of Flagstaff, Arizona; Justin Bull of Chicago, Ill; Joshua Settle married to Kirsten Peterson living in Chicago, Ill; and Jake Settle also of Chicago. Shirley is also survived by her sister, Lois Cory, of Marshalltown, and her sisters-in-law, Beth Keese of Gilman, and Helen Settle of Marshalltown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald, her brother Larry Keese, and her parents.
