Shirley Smith

Shirley Smith, age 86, of Marshalltown, passed away early Saturday morning, July 1st, 2023 at the Unity Point Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

Born Shirley Junge on August 20th, 1936, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Paul and Dorothy (McRill) Junge. She graduated from the State Center High School.

In 1957, she was united in marriage to Dwayne Smith. Though they divorced in 1962, they remained together for years following. Shirley resided in the State Center community and Marshalltown. While in State Center, she lived next to the St. John Church and cleaned there and at the West Marshall Schools. In Marshalltown, she was employed in housekeeping at the Iowa Veterans Home and then as a CNA until retiring after 21 years of dedicated service. She was a former member of the St. John Lutheran Church, most recently she was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and also the Red Hat Ladies.

It was a good day when she could sit outside, have ice cream and go for her hair appointment. It was a great day if it involved her family- especially her grandchildren. She also loved going for rides and spending time with her friends, especially going out to lunch. She had a soft spot in her heart for animals and had several over the years, including a three-legged cat named Smokey.

Left to cherish her memory are three children: Marshall Scott of Marshalltown, Dee (Randy) Gale of Marshalltown and Sheryl (Robert) Phillips of Marshalltown; four grandchildren- Jillisa, Vanessa (Adam), Amanda and Jesse and a nephew, Mark (Tammy) Thompson.

In death, she has rejoined her parents, sister Joann Thompson.
