Shirlie Bell Johnson, 83, of Marshalltown, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2010, at her home. Better known as Bell to her friends and family, she had a long battle with COPD and had been in the wonderful care of her husband and Iowa River Hospice.Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 25th, 2010, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. She was the daughter of Charles and Nellie Elizabeth (Wall) Matney. She attended school in the area of her birth. On December 21, 1942, Bell married Bob Johnson of Marshalltown. The couple resided in Gilman from 1945 to 1948 and then moved to Marshalltown where they still reside today.A long-time Marshalltown resident, Bell worked at Rovners PX before buying the restaurant in the mid-50s and operating it for several years. Bell worked at Marshalltown Manufacturing for approximately 17 years until the plant closed, then spent some of her retirement years working at Stones, Travel Lodge, and Mary Lous.She is survived by her husband, Bob; her son Bobbie and his wife Beth of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughters Rebecca Meier of LeNoir, TN, Megan (Danny) Stephen of LeNoir, TN, and Courtney (Kevin) Kedzierski of Phoenix, AZ; great-grandchildren Chris, Haley, and Kelsea (Rebeccas children), Jake and Allison (Megans children), and Kole and Brady(Courtneys children); her sisters Faye (Hook) Christensen of Cedar Rapids, Colleen (Jerry) Brown of Mitchellville, and Marilyn (John) Ask of Cottonwood, AZ; her brothers Frank Matney and Francis (Madeline) Matney, both of Gilman; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Kenneth, Thomas, George, Charles, and Richard, and sisters Rebecca and Helen.Bell will be missed deeply by family and friends.
