Stanley Magnus Fagerland, 93, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2013, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. He will be laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery at Grand Mound, Iowa at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1, 2013. Memorials may be directed to his family. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Phone 641-844-1234. Born on April 1, 1920, in Calamus, Iowa, he was the son of John and Gurine (Stueland) Fagerland. He graduated with the Grand Mound High Schools Class of 1938. He attended Iowa State University for one year. Stan served our country honorably from July 1945 until the next year. On September 24, 1942, he entered into a 60-year marriage with Ruth Rock. She passed away on August 18, 2003. Stanley was blessed with the love and companionship of Helen Berger and the two were married and made their home in Marshalltown. Stan was an active member of the community. He was a charter member of the Hope United Methodist Church and served as treasurer. He was also a member of Central Iowa Underwriters, American Legion (50 year member), the Masonic Lodge, and Marshalltown Evening Lions Club for over 35 years serving in numerous offices including President. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship, Lion of the Year and the Warren Coleman Award. Stan was a life member of the VFW, American Legion 40 & 8 (serving in many offices). He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and doing crosswords. Stan was very giving of his time and was a volunteer at MMSC and Iowa River Hospice. He was employed by Farm Bureau and Mutual of Omaha before working for and the US Post Office for 19 years. At retirement, he began working for Hy-Vee and continued into his 80s. Left to cherish his memory are Helen, his loving wife of nine years; his daughters: Sandy (Richard) Hickland of Salem, New York, and Susan (David) Carter of Runnells, Iowa; his step-children: Duane (Shari) Berger of Lansing, Michigan, and Cheryl (Rod) Musser of Des Moines; eleven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and ten step-great-grandchildren; as well as his siblings: Signe Rock of Wheatland, Iowa, Bob (Ida) Fagerland of Des Moines; and sister-in-law Evelyn Fagerland of Maquoketa; and many friends. In death, he rejoined his beloved Ruthie, his parents, and brother Johnny.
