Born Stephen Thomas Thompson on December 10, 1960 in Rochester, PA, he was the son of Richard and Kathryn (Keenan) Thompson. Steve grew up in several communities, including Van Buren, PA, Fort Walton Beach, FL and Lexington, MN. The family moved to Marshalltown in the summer of 1974 and Steve has since called it home. After graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1979, he obtained his Associate’s Degree at Marshalltown Community College and attended classes at Iowa State University. Steve was united in marriage to Karen McCallister on June 18, 1983 and the couple was blessed with their two children.

Steve was one of the hardest workers you would ever meet. In addition to dedicating 41 years to UPS, he also worked for 30 years with Dave Benz laying carpet and was an intricate part of the Mitchell Family Funeral Home family for the last several years.

To say Steve was a big sports fan was an understatement. He was a fanatic of all things hockey and his favorite teams were Minnesota North Stars, the Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild and the Iowa State hockey team. His other favorite teams came from his Minnesota roots: Vikings football, Golden Gophers college sports, and Minnesota Twins baseball. Steve’s love of hockey not only involved playing roller hockey league at Skatetown and ice hockey in Ames, but he also coached at Skatetown and ice hockey for the Ames Flyers. He was also an avid runner, competing in multiple races over the years including BIX, Dam to Dam, the Des Moines Marathon, and many others. He was incredibly proud of his qualification for the Boston Marathon and also completed a triathlon.

Steve was passionate about music, and with his vast knowledge of statistics, pop culture and entertainment, was a master at trivia. Not only would he help anyone who needed it, but he also gave back to his community: donating literal gallons of blood and platelets over the years to Life Serve, financially contributing to The United Way and volunteering for the Iowa State men's hockey team. Steve cared so deeply for people and wore his heart on his sleeve. He had an uncanny ability to make everyone laugh with his quips and quotes, while also reminding people just how important they were. He loved his granddaughter Charlotte more than anything in the entire world.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Ashley (Jonathan) Nehman of Newton, IA and Alex Thompson of West Des Moines, IA; granddaughter, Charlotte Nehman; his former spouse, Karen Thompson; his sisters: Andrea DeVries, Valerie (Kirk) Jones and Chris (Brad) Arment; several nieces and nephews, including Dustin, Jesse, Aaron, Joshua and Lexi; and many friends.

In eternal life, Steve is reunited with his parents, Richard and Kathryn and his beloved dog, Sophie.
