Stephen W. Shives

Stephen W. Shives, 74, of Marshalltown passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at his home. Funeral services for Stephen will be held on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at Clemons United Church of Christ in Clemons. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later time. Stephen Shives was born on November 14, 1944 in Marshalltown to Edwin Woodrow and Lois Bartine Shives. He graduated from Clemons High School in 1962 and then went on to Marshalltown Community College. Stephen enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 17, 1964. He was in the 858th radar squadron at Fallon Air Force Base in Nevada. Stephen was honorably discharged on February 17, 1968. On August 21, 1972, Stephen was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Ayers and they had three children together: Shane Stephen, Stephanie Sher and Scott Stephen. Stephen had worked for Combined Insurance and Mark Twain Life Insurance as an insurance agent and traveled several states. Stephen and Sharon lived in Humboldt where they built a house and later moved to Longview, Texas for two years then Salina, Kansas for four years and returned to Iowa, residing in Hampton until 1993. Stephen and Sharon divorced and Stephen moved to the Des Moines area where he worked as a supervisor for PDI until retirement. He loved to watch and coach sports as the kids were growing up, singing in church for special events, traveling and he loved his cars! Stephen was the most easy going and sociable person and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Most importantly, Stephen loved spending time with his grandkids and watching their sporting activities. He moved back home to Marshalltown after the death of his father, Woody in 2013. Stephen is survived by his children: Scott (Carolyn) Shives of Manchester and Stephanie Martin of Ankeny; grandchildren: Zachary Tyler, Johnathon Christopher, Kennis Shamor, Samuel Scott, Aylah Nevaeh Shari and Margot Marie. He is also survived by his sister Melissa Ann (David) Beall of Vancouver, Washington and nephew, David Joshua (Lindsey) Beall of San Jose, California and their twins, Evelyn and Josephine Beall. Stephen is preceded in death by his son, Shane; parents, Edwin and Lois; maternal grandparents, Cyrus and Roxy Bartine; paternal grandparents, Ora Edwin and Effie Luella Shives and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
