Steven Buchanan Sr., age 75 of Garwin, Iowa, passed away on the evening of January 5, 2024 at Unity Point Health in Marshalltown.
At this time, cremation rites have been accorded and a formal celebration of life will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Steve’s name may be directed to his family for a later designation. Steven James Buchanan Sr. was born on March 9, 1949 in Marshalltown, Iowa. Steve was one of two children born to James and Edith (Klinger) Buchanan. Steve completed his education in South Tama graduating in the class of 1967. Steve answered the call of his country and enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War where he was stationed alongside his brother Mike on the USS America. After his years served, he was honorably discharged from service.
Upon his return home, Steve had two sons, Steven Jr. and Christopher Buchanan. He took up residence and made his home in the Marshall and Tama County rural areas. He worked for Lennox in Marshalltown for many years and held many positions until he was lucky enough to retire at the age of 65. On July 22, 1995, he was united in marriage to Margaret “Peggy” Collins (Lingard). From their union, he gained two step children Ryan and Cassidy, and they called Garwin, Iowa their home. Together they made many memories together and celebrated 26 years together before the time of her passing in 2021.
Steven was affectionately known by friends and family as “Bonehead”, a name that he took pride in. In his free time, Steven was a member of the Garwin American Legion, The Veteran Memorial Riders and U.A.W. Local 893 of Marshalltown. He loved to go for many rides on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle (which was the only brand of motorcycle in his mind), had an adoration of classic cars and making modifications to them as he could, he enjoyed being in the outdoors taking to hunting pheasants and deer and spending time finding the right spot for fishing at various lake. He had a soft spot for animals and loved his dogs, Grimmy and Sigh as well as taking care of the wild cats in Garwin. He will be remembered by many for his great storytelling abilities as well as having a great sense of humor and always having a joke to crack. His family will remember the time he was able to spend with them as well as the love that he had for each of his grandchildren.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his children, Steve (Ruth) Buchanan Jr. and Chris (Kylee) Buchanan; his step children, Ryan Collins and Cassidy Collins; his grandchildren, Callum, Gabriel, Amber, Natasha, Carliee, and Caiden; five great-grandchildren; and his brother, Mike (Becky) Buchanan; alongside his special friend Cindy.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Buchanan; his parents James and Edith Buchanan; his granddaughter Maxwell; and numerous extended family members and friends.
