Per the wishes of Steve and Katie, following cremation there will be a private family led celebration of life at the Saylorville Lake Dam Spillway in Johnston, IA, as this was a favorite day trip destination for them. The date and time will be determined later.
Steve Church was born in Fort Dodge, IA, on January 11, 1957, to David and Marilyn Church. Steve was the oldest of four sons.
During high school Steve enjoyed playing the saxophone in band and graduated from Hoover High School in Des Moines, IA, in 1975. Steve was a hard worker throughout his life, and his favorite job was where he was employed at the time of his death. He loved working as a Sales Associate in the Plumbing Department at the Menards store in Marshalltown, where his greatest pleasures included interacting with the public and continually striving to provide top notch customer service.
Steve was previously married to Betty King from 2003 until her passing in 2016. After a chance meeting with Katie Doser in February of 2020, they were married on May 10, 2020 at their Marshalltown home, as their originally planned wedding venue of the Marshalltown Riverside Park Log Cabin closed a few months before their wedding date, due to the COVID shutdown. They shared a mutual love of the NFL and college basketball, enjoyed day trips to various central Iowa sites, and especially loved their time at home with their cat, Toby.
Steve loved continuously learning about new subjects and had many varied interests. Among these were a lifelong love of trains, including enjoying a train simulator game in which he meticulously designed various routes; bald eagle watching; collecting items made from cherry wood; music (he could play the piano by ear and loved karaoke); researching tornadoes; and miniature roses. Steve was a diehard fan of the Dallas Cowboys, the Iowa and Chicago Cubs baseball teams, and golf. He was also looking forward to indulging his brand new interest in the Waterloo Bucks baseball team, as Steve and Katie were transitioning to relocate to Waterloo when he passed.
For Steve, his grandest passion was his family. He was extremely close to his loved ones and enjoyed frequently gathering with them, as well as discussing and reading about his family tree.
Left to cherish the memory of Steve are his wife Katie Church, Waterloo; his mother Marilyn and twin brothers Mark and Tim Church, all of Marshalltown; his brother Brad Church, Ankeny, as well as cousins in various locations.
Among those preceding Steve in death were his father, David Church, and his stepfather, Bill Grother.
On behalf of Katie Church and the Steve Church family, the following organizations are to be thanked for their care of Steve throughout his medical journey: the McFarland Clinics of Marshalltown and Ames; UnityPoint Marshalltown Hospital; MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, as well as the emergency services in Marshalltown.
A special thank you is extended to Dr. Lakshmi Durairaj with University of Iowa Health Care - Iowa River Landing in Coralville, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, and the Menards store in Marshalltown.
Steve's obituary is lovingly written by his family.
