Steve LaVerne Shank, 61, of rural Marshalltown, died Friday, April 27, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. Following cremation, no services are planned at this time. A memorial party will be held during the weekend of June 9, at 1836 Marsh Avenue, Marshalltown. For further information please call (641) 485-0584. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Steve and his family. Steve was born May 17, 1950, in Eldora, Iowa, the son of LaVerne and June (Havens) Shank. He was raised and educated in the Owassa and Gilman areas and went on to graduate from the Grinnell High School. Steve and his family then moved to Albion where he began operating and running the family farm. He also worked for FCC as an over-the-road driver for several years. During his employment with FCC Steve received several awards for safe driving. Steve ran hard and lived the kind of life he wanted. One of his famous quotes, As I walk through the valley of darkness, I fear no evil. I believe I am the meanest person in the valley. Steve loved to sing, play his guitar and write his own music. He also enjoyed farming, shooting guns, camping, fishing, building fires, cooking, Thanksgiving dinners and boating at Red Rock. Steve is survived by his daughters: Shelby See of Albion and Stephanie (Geep) Prescott of Ankeny, his son BJ (Darcy) Ryerson of Albion, his granddaughter Reese, his siblings: Beverly (Archie) Kroeger of Albert Lea, Jackie Shineflew of Des Moines, Georgia (Fred) Whitmore of Albert Lea, Minnesota, BernaDene (Tim) Hutchinson of Marshalltown, and his sister-in-law Pat Shank of Nevada. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ken Shank and a sister in infancy.
