Steven Dale Simmons, 64, of Union, passed away peacefully at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown on December 15, 2016. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, August 26th, from 2 to 4:00 p.m. at the Conrad American Legion. Bill Channell will officiate the services. Memorial contributions may be made in Steves name to the William Bliss Cancer Center in Ames, IA. For condolences please visit www.Mitchellfh.com. Steve was born on February 20, 1952 to Dale G. and Phyllis E. (Rasmussen) Simmons in Marshalltown, IA. He graduated from Beaman-Conrad High School in 1970, and attended Marshalltown Community College studying auto mechanics. Steve served in the US Army from 1972-74 in Korea and was honorably discharged. He worked at Arnold Motor Supply for many years, though he went to Alaska for two years to fish for King crabs. Most recently, he worked for over 20 years at Concrete, Inc. in their Marshalltown and Iowa Falls offices. Steve loved nature and animals and could frequently be seen with his dogs walking the banks of Honey Creek and the Iowa River looking for fossils, or walking the beach on visits to Florida. If you ever took a trip with him, he always took the road less traveled, traversing back roads as far as they would take him. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, being a founding member of the Ringneck Chapter of Pheasants Forever in Iowa and the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was also a member of the American Legion. Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Phyllis; his older brother, Ron; his younger sister, Leann and her husband, Eric Arndt; his niece, Jessica Simmons and step-nephew Jason Bracy, plus other extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father Dale.
