Proud veteran Steven “Steve” Ray Tiller, 74, of Marshalltown, previously of State Center, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at the Iowa Veterans Home. A graveside service for Steve will take place on Friday, July 16 at 10:30 A.M. at Center School Cemetery in rural Marshalltown. Military honors will be provided by the combined VFW / American Legion Honor Guard of the surrounding area. Friends and family are also invited to attend a visitation on Friday, July 16 beginning at 9:30 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. After graduating from Denver High School, Steve enlisted in the United States Army, honorably serving during the Vietnam War. In 1966, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Liz” Helm. They made their home in State Center and were married just shy of 50 years before her passing in 2015. Steve was later united in marriage to Janell Irene Probst on September 29, 2018. A hard worker, Steve was employed at JBS Swift, where he retired in 2012. He was a member of the local UAW and American Legion. Steve enjoyed wrestling, singing, gardening and playing on computers, as well as watching movies and college basketball, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. A true Christian family man, Steve loved the Lord and spending time with his wife and his grandkids. He had a real sweet tooth and especially enjoyed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janell; their combined children: Chad (Jessica) Tiller, Kristoffer Tiller, Margaret Tiller, Darnyl McDaniel, Brian McDaniel, Sean McDaniel and Teresa Goode-Smith; granddaughters: Aurora, Rainn and Starla Tiller; 13 step-grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren and his siblings: Ron (Florence) Tiller and Sue (Jim) McLeland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In death, he rejoins his first wife, Liz, his parents and his sister, who passed in early childhood.
