Terry McEnany, 59, of the Iowa Veterans Home, formerly of Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, died Friday, May 11, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services are pending under the professional care of the Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Home in Waterloo. He will be laid to rest in St. Patricks Cemetery at Winthrop, Iowa. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home was entrusted with local arrangements in Marshalltown. From 1996 until 2007, he was the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Funeral Board. McEnany was recognized for his leadership role in developing educational programs for the profession and general public and in advocating key legislation strengthening consumer protection. His career spanned over four decades as a nationally recognized educator and state official receiving commendations from Texas and Oklahoma Governors, Legislatures and Colleges. McEnany earned a Bachelors degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and a Masters Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran. McEnany began a career in funeral service at an early age practicing in Waterloo and Des Moines, Iowa. In 1981, he joined the faculty of Pierce Colleges and rose through the ranks from Professor to College President. He became the youngest college president in the nation at the age of 29. In 1988, McEnany served as founding President constructing the Commonwealth College in Houston, Texas. He later was elected President of the Board of Regents. In 1992, he served as the founding regent of the funeral museum in Houston. McEnany also served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Dean of Academic Affairs of Simmons Institute in Syracuse, New York. McEnany served in various other professional, civic and fraternal organizations including: past Chairman of the Council of Universities and College of the American Board, Committee on Accreditation, past president of the National Association of Private Colleges, Board member of the Academy of Professional Service Practice and was involved with developing several of the professional textbooks and a contributing author of Embalming, History Theory and Practice. Terry McEnany was born on May 31, 1952, in Independence, Iowa the son of Stella M. (Lyness) and Louis A. McEnany. He is survived by his brother James A. McEnany of Marion, Iowa and sister Peggy White of Worthington, Iowa, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. In death, he rejoined his parents and sister Linda Gerard of Naperville, IL.
