Thelma May Forbes, 95, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 1, 2015. Funeral services for Thelma will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. at the Le Grand Friends Church with Pastor Alan Mullikin officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. also at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Le Grand Friends Church Vacation Bible School. Thelma Hash was born on March 21, 1919, in Corwith, Iowa to Lester and Flora Bosworth Hash. Thelma lived in Corwith until the 8th grade and then moved to Moberly, Missouri. She graduated from Moberly Junior College in 1936. Thelma then moved back to Corwith and worked two years doing housework for a family at three dollars a week. Thelma later enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and graduated in 1940. In 1941, Thelma began teaching 4th and 5th grade at Melbourne Public School. Thelma was united in marriage to Harry J. Forbes on June 12, 1943, in Temple, Texas. Harry was stationed at Fort Hood in the United States Army. Thelma returned on September 3, 1943, and continued teaching at Melbourne, Perry and Van Cleve and finished at the L.D.F. system in Le Grand. Thelma earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Drake University in 1965. Thelma retired from teaching in May of 1989 at the age of 70. She had a love for teaching and taught children for 45 years. Thelma also taught Sunday school for 75 years and was honored at the Le Grand Friends Church for her service. Thelma coordinated the menu and prepared the refreshments for Vacation Bible School for 22 years. Thelma was the Grand Marshall at Pioneer Days in Le Grand in 2000. She was a member of the Ministry Council and Christian Ed at the church. She belonged to the ACT Club, Lioness, a card club, coffee group, retired teachers club, CB radio club (citizen band) and a rock club. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, gardening and baking. Left to cherish her memory are her children Larry Marvin (Sharon) Forbes and Beverly May Forbes. Grandchildren: Karri (Steven) Smallwood, Kalisha (Derek) Brewster and Kelly Pratt. Eight great grandchildren: Timothy, Tiffany, Thomas, Anastasia, Aaron, Lorraine, Joshua and Ryan. Two great great grandchildren: Emmett and Carson and her brother Lester (Cindy) Hash. Thelma is preceded in death by her husband, Harry, her parents Lester and Flora and siblings: Ralph (Adeline) Hash, Florence (Lester) Eden and Wanda (Gene) Baughman and great-granddaughter Charity Smallwood.
