Tom Goecke, age 68, passed away on October 19th, 2022 at Grandview Heights (his home for the last 13 years) after a 37 year battle with M.S. Despite his diagnosis, he was always up-beat and never discouraged. Tom was raised on the home place on “Goecke Road”. He was born on January 5, 1954, the 2nd son of Robert and Gertrude (Vry) Goecke. Tom enjoyed showing cattle with the LaMoille 4H club and also the West Marshall FFA. Tom had lots of hobbies; his biggest one was building a “kit car” from the ground up, a 1929 Mercedes Gazelle. He also had a Triumph Spitfire that he liked driving and hunting with his dogs. Tom was an avid gun enthusiast and collector. For many years he bowled in leagues in Marshalltown and at one time was a league secretary. He graduated from West Marshall in 1972, then attended MCC and Iowa State University. In the early 1980’s, he was able to go on a trip to Europe with college friends. Tom worked for the D.O.T. before joining his dad and brother in the farming operation. Tom married Denise Cobb in Las Vegas, but they later divorced. In 1985, Tom was diagnosed with M.S. He helped with the farm for a few more years, until it became too difficult for him. Then he took a job at Cashway Lumber Store. He lived independently as long as he could before moving to Grandview Heights.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother in 1998 and his dad in 2004. He is survived by his brother, Bob (Paula) Goecke, niece Lynn Goecke of Ankeny and nephew Craig Goecke of State Center.
Tom’s family is so appreciative of the many caring staff at Grandview for providing the best possible home for him. We especially thank nurse, Heather for her exceptional care given and also Pastor Terry Collins for his many, many visits.
Cremation rites have been accorded, and a visitation will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. A private family burial will be at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery.
