Thomas W. Morgan Jr., 88, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed on in the early hours of a snowy Veteran’s Day on Monday, November 11, 2019 at the Iowa River Hospice Home with his wife at his side. Funeral services for Tom will be held Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow with full military honors at Bangor Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, November 15, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Memorials in Tom’s name may be directed to Iowa River Hospice. Thomas William Morgan Jr. was born June 9, 1931 in Aiken, South Carolina to Thomas W. and Nell (Lake) Morgan. He grew up in Clemson, South Carolina and graduated from Calhoun-Clemson High School in 1948. Tom then attended Clemson College and in 1952 graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. In 1959 he received a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. Tom served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Signal Corps from 1952-1954. Tom worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Morristown, New Jersey and later worked at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Marietta, Georgia. In 1983 Tom began working as the chief electrical engineer at MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) in Atlanta, Georgia. He retired from MARTA in 1997. On April 24, 1982 he was united in marriage to Barbara Jo (Norman) Nichols in Clemson, South Carolina. Tom’s memberships included Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and he was a commander in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a former member of the Atlanta Sail & Power Squadron, where he served as vice commander. Tom’s hobbies included boating, photography, ham radio, and computers. He was an avid fan of the Clemson Tigers and Atlanta Braves. Tom was a true southern gentleman. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Barbara Jo; stepdaughters, who he loved as his own, Diane Roberts, Donna (Dan) Brandt, and Darla Nichols; grandchildren Mark Byers, Julie (Jon) Lee, Amy (Cory) Howell, Nicholas Schinnow, and Justin Schinnow; four great-grandchildren; sister Judith Powers; three nieces and one nephew. Tom’s parents and his stepson-in-law Timothy Roberts preceded him in death.
