Thomas “Tom” Swearingen, age 78, of Albion, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Per Tom’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and no formal services are planned at this time.

Thomas Charles Swearingen was born December 7, 1947 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Jack Swearingen and Marjorie Tenney (Eggers). He attended school in Le Grand, Iowa and was a graduate of LDF in the Class of 1966. Following high school, Tom enlisted in the United States Navy where he attended his boot camp in San Diego, California. He served until 1970 when he was honorably discharged from service.

After serving his county, he moved to Minnesota where he took classes for traffic and management. He began a career with Murphy Motor Freight as a long haul manager for a number of years. Over the years, his career took him to California, Arizona and eventually settled in Iowa, making Albion his home. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, camping, tinkering in the garage with cars and never missed a NASCAR race weekend.

Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his nephew, Randy Carkhuff of Kansas City and close friends, Denny Weaver and Mary Pyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Swearingen and Marjorie Tenney; his sister, Sandra Jo Kelley; and niece, Tari Carkhuff.

The family wishes to thank Mary Pyle, Tom’s close friends and Iowa River Hospice for helping to care for Tom over the last few weeks.
