Thomas “Tom” Pilkington, 78, previously of Denver, Colorado, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa under the care of Iowa River Hospice.
Per the wishes of Tom and his family, cremation rites have been accorded. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Parish – St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation will start one hour prior, beginning at 9:30 a.m. He will be laid to rest at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery with full military honors provided by the combined VFW/American Legion of the surrounding area. Mitchell Family Funeral has been entrusted with the care of Tom and his family. Memorials may be directed to the Matt Pilkington Scholarship Fund at Marshalltown Community College. Thomas Joseph Pilkington was born on April 17, 1946 in McGregor, Iowa. He was one of ten children born to Clif Thomas and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Melvin) Pilkington. After graduating from Marshalltown High School and attending Marshalltown Community College, Tom honorably served his country for four years in the United States Navy. Upon his return, he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he spent the majority of his adult life working as warehouse manager at Jim Paris Tyre City. In retirement he returned to Iowa in 2015 to be closer to family. Tom was very social, and enjoyed playing cards and trips to Canada to go fishing. He also liked watching NASCAR and reading, and staying active by walking and biking.
Left to cherish his memory are his siblings: Bruce Pilkington of CO, Will (Linda) Pilkington of CO, Sue (Bob) Beurskens of Marshalltown, Sarah (Ken) Hesmer of Marshalltown, Beth (Terry) Anson of Marshalltown, Terry Pilkington of Des Moines and Kevin Pilkington of Lincoln, NE; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In eternal life, Tom is reunited with his parents, Cliford and Betty; siblings Jan Fields and Keith Pilkington and a nephew, Matt Pilkington.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and blessings to the Iowa River Hospice Home and the Iowa Veterans Home for the wonderful care they gave to Tom.
