Timothy "Tim" Hillygus

Timothy “Tim” Hillygus, age 60, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away early Tuesday morning, November 14, 2023 at the Iowa River Hospice Home.

Services for Tim will take place on Saturday, November 18 at 3:00 PM at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a visitation one hour prior, beginning at 2:00 P.M. Born Timothy Robert Hillygus on November 18, 1962 in Marshalltown, Iowa, he was the son of Gary Hillygus and Carol (Cooper) McLain. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1981 and continued his education in Fire Science at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Tim was married to the love of his life, Tanya Brooks, on June 19, 1993 in Rockwall, Texas. The couple made their home in Marshalltown, where they raised their two children.

Tim was tough, hardworking and passionate, traits that not only made him an amazing role model and family-man, but also led to a dedicated 37-year career with the Marshalltown Fire Department as Captain. He developed close friendships with some crew members over the years, and they were grateful for his work ethic and the structure his leadership provided.

Tim prioritized his family by being fully present whenever he was home and supporting his kids in their activities: volleyball and golf for Staci and baseball and basketball for Hunter. He had a great sense of humor, a strong will and a fighting spirit. He was both loving and strong and was always there for his family and friends. In his free time, Tim enjoyed woodworking, golf, yardwork and gardening. He was also an avid Red Sox fan.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 30 years, Tanya; his two children: Staci (Justin) Scavo of West Des Moines and Hunter Hillygus of Waukee; his granddaughter Elena Scavo; siblings: Keri McCoy of Tama, Jason (Krista) Hillygus of Republic, MO and Joel (Sunshine) Hillygus of Durham, NC; his brother-in-law, Trent Brooks of Marshalltown; nephew Jake and two nieces, Grace and Gabrielle.

In eternal life, Tim is reunited with his father Gary Hillygus, his mother Carol McLain, grandmother Maurine Cooper, brother-in-law Mark McCoy, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Hildi and Merrill Brooks.
