Urban Kunkel, 89, died Tuesday, December 11, in the peace of his home. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, at St. Marys Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed in Urban's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation or St. Mary's Catholic Church. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Urban and his family. Born on November 6, 1923, in Haverhill, he was the son of John and Bertha (Freese) Kunkel. He received his education in the St. Joseph Parochial School in Haverhill. Soon he began helping his father on the farm while his brothers went to serve in WWII. On October 30, 1944, he was united in marriage to Colleen Reese at St. Marys Catholic Church. They made their home in Marshalltown all of their married lives where he was employed with Lennox for 43 years of faithful service as well as working at the Marshall Vinegar Works, tending bar and installing furnaces on weekends. Mr. Kunkel was a faithful member of St. Marys parish, the KC, Catholic Order of Foresters and enjoyed music, bowling, hunting, camping, fishing, ballgames of all types, helping family members farm, Vegas trips and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals! Left to cherish his memory are his children: Janice (Toby) Godfrey, Larry (Mindy) Kunkel and Brian (Jody) Kunkel all of Marshalltown; 13 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, his sisters: Rosella (Bob) Hartwig of Marshalltown, Esther (Jim) Nusbaum of Marshalltown and Marilyn (Al) Spafford of Marshalltown, sisters-in-law Carmen Kunkel of Marshalltown, Mary Kunkel of Davenport, Judy Kunkel of Haverhill and Delores Kunkel of Davenport as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In death, Urban rejoined his beloved Colleen, his parents, brothers Cy, Wilbur Bill, Ed, Elmer and his son, David, who died in infancy.
