Valerie Hartwell Stabenow Enlow

Valerie Hartwell-Stabenow-Enlow, 63, died Sunday morning, December 16, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Born Valerie Hartwell on January 17, 1949, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Robert and Shirley (Cooley) Hartwell. She attended school in Albion and later in Marshalltown. In 1972, Val was united in marriage to Roger Stabenow and they made their home in Marshalltown, where she was employed in the laundry department at Marshalltown Manor. Later, she worked at the 13th Street Inn for over 20 years. She and Roger had three kids: Todd, Tony and Lisa, who caused her a lot of grief and grey hair. On August 2, 2002, Val was united in marriage to Preston Eugene Gene Enlow in Bloomfield, Iowa. They lived together in Libertyville, IA, where they enjoyed entertaining family, playing cards, and caring for their best friends: Peewee, Blackie, Whitney and Becca-Sue. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 10 years, Gene, her children: Todd Stabenow of Marshalltown, Tony Stabenow of South Beach, Florida and Lisa Stabenow (Saul Vasquez) of Marshalltown; her grandchildren: Adriana Andrade, Kruz Vasquez and Keyana Vasquez all of Marshalltown; her sisters: Gloria Dankbar of Marshalltown, Roberta Stier of Chandler, AZ and Jill Hartwell of Libertyville as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step-children: Geraldine Enlow, Harold Enlow, Gloria Bestland and Preston Enlow as well as a whole bunch of grandkids! Val had an especially close relationship with her niece Jody Wallen (married to Kenny Wallen of Albion) and her nephew Wesley Hartley of Newburg, IA. In death, Val rejoined her mother (20 years to the day), her father, and her brother, Donald. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, December 21 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home.
